Místico hindú. Nació en el seno de una familia pobre de brahmanes, trabajó como sacerdote en un templo de Kali en Calcuta (actualmente Kolkata), donde tuvo una visión y empezó a realizar las prácticas espirituales de distintas doctrinas religiosas. Declaró que el deseo sexual y el dinero eran los dos males que impedían alcanzar la iluminación espiritual, rechazó el sistema de castas y sostuvo que todas las religiones son legítimas y en esencia la misma. Sus enseñanzas fueron difundidas por sus discípulos, principalmente
Vivekananda. Una orden religiosa que lleva su nombre y con sede en Kolkata, envía misioneros por todo el mundo.
